About Vespa

What it is

Vespa is a search and recommendation platform that evaluates vector similarity, traditional text matching and structured filters in a single query, then ranks the result with a model. It is open source, runs self-hosted or as a managed cloud, and is built for continuously updating data rather than static indexes.

Why it's different

Most stacks bolt a vector database onto a text search engine and reconcile two result sets in application code, which is both slow and hard to rank well. Doing it in one engine is the technically correct answer and the reason it shows up behind large recommendation and retrieval systems. It is also genuinely hard to operate: the configuration surface is large, the concepts are its own, and a small project will get further faster with something simpler.

How people use it

Retrieval-augmented generation over a corpus that keeps changing. Recommendation and personalisation at scale. Search where filters, text relevance and embeddings all matter. Budget real time for learning its ranking model, because the default configuration is a starting point and not an answer.
