About Exa

What it is

Exa is a search API designed to be called by software. A query returns the content of matching pages rather than a list of links, with separate endpoints for fetching contents, running longer research tasks and monitoring sources for changes, at latencies from a few hundred milliseconds to several seconds depending on depth.

Why it's different

Consumer search engines are built around a human reading a results page, and agents that scrape them inherit every anti-bot measure and every layout change. An API that returns the text is the right shape for the job, and the tiered latency is an honest acknowledgement that agents sometimes want fast and sometimes want thorough. The cost is per call, which adds up quickly inside a loop, and its index is its own rather than Google's, so coverage differs.

How people use it

Giving an assistant current information it was not trained on. Research agents that need to read rather than link. Watching a set of sources for change. Cap the number of searches an agent may run per task, because an unbounded research loop is the fastest way to a surprising bill.
