About Vapi
What it is
Vapi assembles the pieces a voice agent needs - speech recognition, a language model, speech synthesis, telephony and interruption handling - into one platform, with tooling to test agents and improve them once they are taking real calls.
Why it's different
The pieces are all available separately, and the reason people stop assembling them is that the hard parts are the joins: knowing when the caller has finished speaking, handling an interruption gracefully, and recovering when the model produces something unusable mid-call. Vapi is opinionated about those, which is why teams get to production quickly. The trade is that you inherit its opinions, and per-minute pricing across several vendors makes the true cost of a call harder to predict than it looks.
How people use it
Inbound support lines and call triage. Outbound qualification and appointment booking. Any workflow currently sitting in a phone queue. Listen to whole recordings from the first week rather than reading summaries, because the failures that lose customers are conversational and never appear in a transcript metric.
