About AssemblyAI

What it is

AssemblyAI is a speech-to-text service for developers. You send it audio through an API and get back a transcript, along with speaker labels, topic detection, summaries and sentiment, rather than only the words.

Why it's different

It sells the analysis layer as much as the transcription, which is the difference from a raw transcription service: working out who spoke, what was discussed and what mattered is usually the reason you wanted a transcript at all. It is a developer product with no interface for a person who simply has a recording, and it is priced by the hour of audio, so a large back catalogue costs real money to process. For occasional transcription there are far cheaper paths.

How people use it

Building transcription into a product. Call analysis for sales and support teams. Making a media archive searchable. Summarising meetings inside another application. Run a representative sample through before committing, particularly anything with accents, crosstalk or technical vocabulary, because accuracy varies more by recording quality than by vendor.
