About ElevenLabs
What it is
ElevenLabs turns written text into spoken audio that sounds close to a real person. You paste a script, choose a voice, and get an audio file. It handles many languages, can adjust delivery and pacing, and can create a voice from a recording sample.
Why it's different
The quality is the reason it is known. Older text-to-speech is instantly recognisable as a machine; this generally is not, which changes what it can be used for — narration people will actually listen to rather than merely tolerate. That also makes the voice cloning genuinely sensitive: recreating someone's voice without their agreement is both an ethical problem and, in a growing number of places, a legal one. Only clone a voice you have clear permission to use.
How people use it
Narrating videos, courses and explainers without recording anything. Making an article listenable. Prototyping a script before booking a real voice actor, which is often cheaper than the alternative. Adding voice to a game or app. Accessibility uses matter too — turning documents into audio for people who prefer or need to listen rather than read.
Step by step
- Paste the script in and pick a voice, then generate one short test of your actual opening lines rather than the demo text.
- Break long paragraphs into separate generations. Delivery drifts over long passages and a per-paragraph file is easier to re-do.
- Adjust stability and similarity a little at a time. Pushing either to an extreme is what produces the flat or the erratic read.
- Use punctuation as direction — commas and full stops change pacing more reliably than any setting.
- Only clone a voice you have documented permission to use. This is the part that becomes a legal problem later rather than immediately.
