About Suno
What it is
Suno generates complete songs from a text description — music, vocals, structure and lyrics together. You describe a style and a subject, or supply your own words, and it produces a finished track. You need no instrument, no software and no musical training.
Why it's different
Most AI music tools produce backing loops or instrumental beds. This produces songs with sung vocals, which is a different thing entirely and the reason it caught on. The results are strongest in mainstream styles and get less convincing the more unusual the request. It is best understood as a fast way to get a serviceable track for a specific purpose rather than a substitute for a musician.
How people use it
Background music for videos and podcasts where licensing a real track is an obstacle. Personalised songs for birthdays and weddings, which is a surprisingly common use. Sketching an idea quickly before recording it properly. Jingles and short-form audio branding. If a track will be used commercially, read the terms on your plan carefully — rights differ between free and paid tiers.
Step by step
- Describe the song as a producer would — genre, instrumentation, tempo, mood — rather than describing the subject of the lyrics.
- Write your own lyrics rather than letting it generate them, which is the single biggest difference between a demo and something listenable.
- Generate several takes of the same prompt and keep the structure you like, then extend that one rather than re-rolling.
- Use the extend and remix tools to build a full arrangement, because a single generation is a fragment rather than a song.
- Check the current commercial terms before releasing anything. This is the corner of the field where the legal position is moving fastest.
