Stable Diffusion is an open image generation model rather than a product. You can run it on your own computer, reach it through many third-party interfaces, or build it into software, and a large ecosystem of fine-tuned variants and add-ons has grown up around it.
Why it's different
Being open is the entire point, and it buys three things nothing else offers: it runs offline on your own hardware, there is no per-image cost once it does, and nobody can change the terms or withdraw a capability you depend on. It is also the only realistic route to a model trained on your own images. In exchange, raw quality trails the best commercial generators, running it locally needs a capable GPU and real setup, and licensing differs across its many versions and derivatives.

Generating at volume where per-image costs would matter. Working offline, or with images that cannot be uploaded anywhere. Training a model on your own subject or style. Building generation into your own software. Check the licence of the specific version and any fine-tune you use, because open covers several different sets of commercial terms here.
