About Replicate
What it is
Replicate runs open-source models through an API. You call a hosted version of a published model without provisioning any hardware, and you can package and deploy your own, paying for the compute you actually use.
Why it's different
It removed the hard part of using open models, which was never the model but the GPU, the environment and the deployment. Paying by the second for something that would otherwise need a rented machine is the right shape for intermittent work. Two costs. Models that are not kept warm have a cold start that rules them out for anything interactive, and per-second pricing that is excellent at low volume becomes worse than your own hardware once usage is steady and high.
How people use it
Trying open models without infrastructure. Occasional or bursty generation workloads. Deploying your own model without building serving infrastructure. Work out the crossover point against a rented GPU early, because the economics reverse at a volume most people reach sooner than they expect.
