What it is
AI21 builds foundation models and systems for business use. Its current products are a gateway that sits in front of model traffic and routes each request to reduce token cost and waste, and post-training services that build a model on a customer's own data which the customer then owns.
Why it's different
The interesting move is the reframing: rather than competing on being the best model, it competes on spending less to reach the same answer, which is the problem most teams actually have once something is in production. Ownership of a post-trained model is a real differentiator against renting capability indefinitely. It is squarely enterprise - pricing, sales motion and minimum scale all assume it - and there is nothing here for an individual to open and try.
