About Anthropic

What it is

Anthropic is an AI research company. It builds the Claude family of models, reachable through a chat interface, a developer API, a command-line coding tool and integrations into other products, and it publishes much of its safety and interpretability research openly.

Why it's different

Its models are consistently strong on long documents, careful reasoning and writing that does not read as generated, and the coding work in particular has a serious following. The safety positioning is genuine rather than decorative, and it has a cost: Claude refuses more, hedges more, and adds caveats where a competitor simply answers, which is either the reassurance you wanted or a daily irritation depending on the work. It is also a smaller company than its main rivals, with a narrower product surface.

How people use it

Long documents, contracts and reports that must be held in view at once. Writing and editing where tone matters. Software development, especially across many files. Analysis where you would rather see the reasoning than a confident answer. Compare it against the alternative on your own hardest task, because the differences between frontier models now show up in specifics rather than in benchmarks.
