About Cohere
What it is
Cohere builds and hosts its own model family - generation, embeddings, reranking, transcription, translation and document parsing - plus an enterprise search product and an agent platform. Models can run in Cohere's cloud, in your cloud account, or on your own hardware.
Why it's different
Two things separate it from the better-known labs. The embedding and rerank models are genuinely strong and are what a lot of retrieval systems quietly run on, regardless of which model writes the final answer. And private deployment is a first-class option rather than an enterprise afterthought, which is the deciding factor for anyone whose data cannot leave the building. On raw general-purpose reasoning it is not trying to win the headline benchmarks.
How people use it
Retrieval systems that need better ranking than similarity alone. Regulated environments where the model must run in your own account. Multilingual search and classification. Try rerank on an existing retrieval pipeline before changing anything else, because it is usually the cheapest improvement available.
