About Qwen
What it is
Qwen is Alibaba's chat interface to its own family of models, covering text, code, images and audio. Many of those models are released with open weights and can be downloaded and run independently.
Why it's different
The open releases are the substantive part: Qwen models are among the strongest open weights available, particularly in the smaller sizes that run on modest hardware, and they have become a common base for fine-tuning. Using the hosted chat is a different proposition from running the weights, though. It is operated by a Chinese company, so data handling and content restrictions differ from what UK or EU users may expect, and for sensitive material self-hosting the same weights is the better route.
How people use it
Trying the models before deciding whether to self-host. Multilingual work, particularly involving Chinese. Finding a strong open base model to fine-tune. Running a capable model on modest hardware. Prefer the open weights on your own infrastructure for anything confidential, since that gets you the capability without the hosting question.
