What it is
Character.AI lets you chat with AI characters, either ones other users have made or ones you create by writing a short description and some example dialogue. Conversations are ongoing and characters stay in role.
Why it's different
The roleplay is better sustained than a general assistant pretending to be a character, which is why people use it for hours rather than minutes. That is precisely the concern. It is engaging by design, the audience skews young, and the company has faced serious criticism and legal action over how attached users become and how it responds in a crisis. It is not a productivity tool and it is not a safe place to take real distress.
How people use it
Interactive fiction and collaborative storytelling. Language practice with a patient partner. Rehearsing an interview against a character playing the interviewer. If a young person in your house uses it, look at the parental controls and know that the safety filters are imperfect. Anyone in genuine difficulty needs a person, not this.
