About Claude.ai

What it is

Claude is a chat assistant made by Anthropic. You type into it and get written answers back: explanations, drafts, rewrites, analysis of documents you upload, and help thinking a problem through. It reads long files, works with images and spreadsheets, and can hold a great deal of material in one conversation. There is a free tier, with paid plans that raise how much you can do in a day.

Why it's different

It is the one people reach for when the input is long or the writing matters. It handles large documents in a single conversation without losing the thread, and its prose tends to need less editing than most — fewer stock phrases, less padding. It is also more willing to say a question is unclear or that it is unsure, which is mildly annoying and genuinely useful. It has no image generation, so it is the wrong tool if that is what you came for.

How people use it

Uploading a long report, contract or set of notes and asking what it says, what changed, or what needs a decision. Editing writing you already drafted, where the instruction is to tighten rather than replace. Working through a problem out loud across several messages. Explaining code, data or an unfamiliar document at whatever level you ask for. As with any assistant, it is reliable when you supply the material and unreliable when it has to recall facts, so check names, dates and figures.

Step by step

  1. Paste the whole document rather than an excerpt. Long context is what it is best at, and summarising it yourself first throws away the advantage.
  2. Use Projects to keep reference material attached across conversations, so the background is loaded once rather than re-pasted.
  3. Ask for the argument against your plan, not just the plan. It will disagree when asked directly, and that is the most useful thing it does.
  4. For code, describe the constraint rather than the fix you had in mind — it is better at proposing an approach than at typing out yours.
  5. Correct the specific sentence that is wrong instead of starting again, because the rest of the answer is usually fine.
  6. Expect hedging and caveats. Ask it to commit to an answer if you want one, which it will.
