About Otter.ai
What it is
Otter.ai listens to meetings and writes down what was said. It joins calls on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, produces a searchable transcript with speakers labelled, and generates a summary with the action items it detected. It also records in-person conversations from a phone.
Why it's different
It does one job and does it properly. General assistants can summarise a transcript, but something has to produce the transcript first, and that is the part that is genuinely tedious. Speaker labelling and a timestamped, searchable record are the difference between a summary you trust and one you cannot check. Accuracy drops with strong accents, crosstalk and jargon, so read the transcript before relying on a quote.
How people use it
Being present in a meeting instead of typing through it, which is the main reason people adopt it. Searching back through weeks of calls for the moment something was agreed. Sending a summary with action items straight after a client call. Catching up on a meeting that clashed with another. Check whether everyone in a conversation is comfortable being recorded, and whether your workplace or local law requires you to ask.
