What it is
Hugging Face is the main hub for open machine learning. It hosts models, datasets and demonstration applications, provides the libraries most open-model work is built on, and offers hosted inference and training for people who would rather not run their own hardware.
Why it's different
It is where the open ecosystem lives, and the network effect is the point: a new open model appears here first, along with the code, the community discussion and usually somebody's fine-tune. Nothing else is close for discovery. The caveat matters, though. Anyone can publish, so quality, licensing and safety vary enormously and a download is not an endorsement. Licences differ far more than people assume, and several popular models are not free for commercial use.

Finding and evaluating open models. Downloading datasets. Hosting a demonstration of your own work. Building on the standard open-source libraries. Read the model card and the licence for anything you intend to ship, because the practical restrictions are frequently not what the word open implies.

- Read the model card before downloading anything — the licence there is frequently not what the word open implies.
- Filter by task rather than browsing, because the hub is enormous and most of it is not maintained.
- Check the download count and the last commit date. An unmaintained model with a broken config wastes an afternoon.
- Try it in the hosted inference widget on the model page before setting anything up locally.
- For commercial use, confirm the licence of the specific fine-tune rather than the base model. They often differ.
