What it is
Flowise is an open-source tool for building applications on top of language models using a visual canvas. You drag nodes for models, prompts, memory, retrieval and tools, connect them, and expose the result as an API or a chat widget. It can be self-hosted.
Why it's different
Self-hosting is the argument: your prompts, your documents and your keys stay on infrastructure you control, and there is no per-run charge, which matters for anything touching material that should not sit on someone else's platform. The canvas also makes a retrieval pipeline legible in a way code does not. In exchange you own the hosting, the upgrades and the debugging, and the visual approach becomes a hindrance once the logic is complicated enough that you would rather write it.
How people use it
Internal chatbots over your own documents. Prototyping a retrieval pipeline before committing to code. Teaching how these systems fit together. Running a small AI feature without a per-call bill. Plan to move to code if it succeeds, because the canvas is excellent for reaching a working version and awkward to maintain past that point.
