About n8n
What it is
n8n is a workflow automation tool you can run on your own server. It has a visual builder similar to the hosted alternatives, plus the option to drop into code for a step that does not fit a prebuilt block. There is a managed version if you would rather not host it.
Why it's different
Self-hosting is the whole argument: your data stays on infrastructure you control, and running cost is a server rather than a per-task charge, which matters enormously at volume. It also has strong support for chaining AI model calls. Against that, self-hosting is a job — updates, backups, uptime — and its source-available licence has commercial restrictions that are worth reading rather than assuming.
How people use it
High-volume automations where per-task pricing would be painful. Workflows touching data that should not sit on someone else's platform. Teams with a developer who can maintain it. If nobody wants to own the server, the managed version or a hosted competitor will cost less in the end than an automation nobody is patching.
