About Visual Studio Code
What it is
Visual Studio Code is a free, open-source code editor from Microsoft. It is not an AI tool by itself. It is the editor most AI coding assistants plug into, and it now ships with AI features of its own, which is why it belongs in a list like this one.
Why it's different
Its advantage is the extension ecosystem: almost every assistant worth trying has a VS Code extension, so it is the cheapest place to change your mind. That makes it the sensible default if you are not sure which AI tool you want, because switching costs an install rather than a migration. The editor itself is heavier than a plain text editor and lighter than a full IDE, which pleases nobody completely.
How people use it
Everyday editing in almost any language. Trying two AI assistants side by side before committing to either. Remote work over SSH or inside a container, which it handles well. If an AI editor you are evaluating is a VS Code fork, your settings and extensions will usually come with you.
