About Amazon Q Developer

What it is

Amazon Q Developer is AWS's coding assistant. It suggests and completes code in your editor, answers questions about a codebase, and runs as an agent that can carry out larger changes such as upgrading a language version across a whole project. It also works from the command line.

Why it's different

Its advantage is knowing AWS. It can read your actual account, explain why a deployment failed, and write infrastructure code against the services you are really using, which general assistants can only guess at. Outside that context it is an ordinary assistant and usually behind the leaders at plain code completion. It also needs AWS account setup that rival tools do not, so trying it casually is more work than installing an extension.

How people use it

Writing and debugging infrastructure code. Understanding an unfamiliar AWS setup. Language and framework upgrades across a large codebase. Everyday completion for teams already inside AWS. Judge it on AWS work rather than on general coding, because that is where it wins and where the comparison actually matters.
