What it is
Vertex AI is Google Cloud's machine learning platform. It provides access to Google's models and many others, along with the surrounding apparatus: training, tuning, deployment, monitoring, and the governance controls enterprises require.
Why it's different
It is built for organisations rather than for developers experimenting, and that is the honest framing: the value sits in governance, audit trails, data residency controls and integration with the rest of Google Cloud, not in a faster route to a prototype. If your data is already there, keeping the models beside it is a strong argument. The cost is complexity. It is considerably harder to start with than a plain API, and its pricing is difficult to predict in advance.
How people use it
Enterprises already on Google Cloud. Regulated environments needing audit and residency controls. Deploying and monitoring models in production at scale. Use a simple API for prototyping and move here when governance is the actual requirement, because starting with the platform slows down work that has not yet proven itself.
