What it is
TensorFlow is an end-to-end open-source machine learning platform: model building, training, and a deployment ecosystem that includes TensorFlow Lite for mobile and embedded devices, TensorFlow.js for browsers, and TFX for production pipelines.
Why it's different
Research moved to PyTorch and it is not coming back, so choosing TensorFlow today is a deployment decision rather than a modelling one. That is where it still wins: getting a model onto a phone, a microcontroller or into a browser is better trodden here than anywhere else, and TFX is a serious answer to production pipelines. The cost is a smaller flow of new research code and a documentation estate that spans several eras of the API, which makes searching for help genuinely confusing.

Deploying models to mobile, edge or browser. Production pipelines that need to be reproducible. Maintaining existing TensorFlow systems. Check which major version a tutorial targets before following it, because the API changed enough between them that old answers actively mislead.
