About Continue

What it is

Continue is an open-source assistant for VS Code and JetBrains. It provides completion, chat and in-editor editing, and lets you choose which model handles each of those, including models running locally on your own machine.

Why it's different

Pointing each feature at a different model is the distinguishing feature, and it is a practical one: a small fast local model for completion, something stronger for chat, and nothing leaving the machine at all where that is the requirement. The flexibility is also the cost. It needs configuration where commercial tools need none, and out of the box it feels rougher than a polished paid assistant. It suits people who want control and will spend an afternoon on it.

How people use it

Working where code cannot be sent to a third party. Using local models on your own hardware. Teams standardising on one model across different editors. Avoiding a per-seat subscription. Budget time for the config file, because the defaults are a starting point rather than a finished setup and most complaints trace back to never having tuned it.
