About Semantic Scholar
What it is
Semantic Scholar is a free academic search engine covering a very large corpus across disciplines. It extracts structure from papers, surfaces influential citations, offers short generated summaries, and provides an open API.
Why it's different
It is free, broad, and run by a non-profit research institute, which is a materially different set of incentives from a commercial product that may be repriced or shut down. Its distinction between influential and incidental citations is genuinely useful. It is a search and discovery tool rather than a reading or extraction assistant, so it finds papers and does not analyse them for you, and metadata quality varies by field and gets patchier outside the well-indexed sciences.
How people use it
General academic search across disciplines. Checking a paper's citations and influence. Finding open-access versions of papers. Building tools on academic metadata through the API. Use it as the free backbone of a workflow and add a paid tool only for the specific thing it cannot do, because much of what the commercial services charge for starts here.
