About Connected Papers

What it is

Connected Papers builds a visual map of academic literature around one paper. You give it a starting reference and it shows a graph of related work, arranged so that papers with similar citation patterns sit near each other.

Why it's different

It answers a question a keyword search cannot: what else belongs to this conversation. Two important papers can share no keywords and still be central to the same subject, and a citation graph finds them where a search box does not. Its limits are real. It depends on citation data, so very recent work is thin and anything poorly indexed is simply missing, and it shows what is connected rather than what is good. A heavily cited paper can be heavily cited for being wrong.

How people use it

Starting a literature review from one known paper. Finding the foundational work in an unfamiliar field. Checking whether you have missed a significant cluster. Use it to build a reading list rather than to judge quality, because proximity on the graph says nothing about whether the work holds up.
