About Scite.ai
What it is
Scite.ai shows how papers cite each other and, importantly, in what manner: whether a citing paper supports the work, contrasts with it, or merely mentions it. It reports those counts rather than one citation number.
Why it's different
This is the most useful idea in academic search tooling. A citation count tells you a paper was noticed, not that it was believed, and a heavily cited paper may be cited largely by work refuting it, which a plain count actively hides. Classifying citations by stance exposes that. The classification is automated and therefore imperfect, so individual labels need checking, and it is a paid product whose value depends on your field being well covered.
How people use it
Checking whether a paper's findings have held up. Assessing a claim before building on it. Finding the work that disputes something. Due diligence on a reference in an unfamiliar field. Read the contrasting citations first, because those are the ones a citation count hides and the ones likeliest to change your mind.
