What it is
Replit is a coding environment that runs entirely in the browser. You open a page and have a working editor, terminal and running application without installing anything. It hosts what you build, handles the database and deployment, and includes an AI agent that can generate and change an app from a description.
Why it's different
It removes setup, which is the thing that stops most people before they start, and that makes it the easiest way to get from an idea to a URL. The trade is that you are working inside someone else's environment: it is slower than a local machine, and an app that grows past a certain size wants to move somewhere else eventually. Costs scale with what you run, so an idle project can still charge you.
How people use it
Learning to program, where not fighting the toolchain is most of the battle. Prototypes and internal tools that need to be online today. Teaching, because everyone sees the same environment. Coding from a device that cannot run a real editor. Export or mirror anything you care about to git rather than leaving it as the only copy.
