About Pieces

What it is

Pieces saves and organises the fragments of a developer's day: code snippets, links, terminal output and screenshots. It runs on your own machine, can recall what you were working on earlier, and offers an assistant that draws on that saved context.

Why it's different

The problem it is built on is real — the useful thing is usually something you already saw, in a tab you have since closed — and a local-first design means that history stays on your machine. Two honest limitations. Any tool that asks you to save things competes with not bothering, and most people do not keep it up. It is also another application running constantly, which is a genuine cost on a laptop that already has too many.

How people use it

Keeping snippets you actually reuse. Recalling what you were doing before an interruption. Working where context cannot be sent to a cloud service. Collecting research spread across many tabs. Try it for a fortnight and be honest about whether you opened it, because the failure mode here is a well-designed tool that quietly goes unused.
