About Kilo
What it is
Kilo is an open-source coding agent that runs in an editor, from the command line or in the cloud. It plans and carries out multi-file changes, and it can route work to any of a large number of models rather than being tied to one provider.
Why it's different
Model choice is the argument, and it is more useful than the raw number suggests: different models are better and cheaper at different things, and sending planning to one and bulk edits to another is a real cost lever. It is young, which shows in the rough edges, and it carries the same open-ended cost exposure as every bring-your-own-key agent. The long model list also invites fiddling, and most people settle on two.
How people use it
Multi-file changes across a project. Anyone wanting one agent across editor, terminal and cloud. Teams keeping options open rather than committing to a single vendor. Cost-conscious work where a cheaper model will do. Set a spending cap at your provider before the first serious session, because per-token agents are where unexpected bills come from.
