What it is
Cognition operates Devin, an agent that takes an engineering task and works it end to end - planning, writing code, running tests and opening a change - inside an existing codebase and the tools a team already uses, rather than as a chat window beside the editor.
Why it's different
The claim being tested here is autonomy rather than assistance, and it is the genuinely contested one in this category. Where the work is well-specified and well-tested it removes a whole class of tickets; where it is not, the agent produces something plausible and the review cost lands on a person who did not write it. That review burden is the real price and it is not in the pricing. Judge it on what it can finish unattended, not on what it can start.
How people use it
Well-scoped tickets with clear acceptance criteria. Migrations and repetitive changes across a codebase. Work that is tedious rather than subtle. Give it a repository with tests that actually fail when something is broken, because an agent's only feedback loop is the one you supply.
