About Cline

What it is

Cline is an open-source coding agent that runs inside VS Code. It reads your project, plans a change, edits files and runs commands, showing you each step for approval. You supply your own model API key rather than paying a subscription.

Why it's different

Bringing your own key is the whole design, and it cuts both ways. You are not limited to whatever model a vendor picked, you can point a frontier model at a hard problem, and nothing is marked up. You also pay per token with no ceiling, and an agent that reads a lot of files before making a small change can cost more in an afternoon than a month's subscription. Being open source it is auditable, which matters for a tool allowed to run commands.

How people use it

Multi-file changes a completion tool cannot manage. Working in a repository you do not know. Automating repetitive refactors. Anyone who would rather choose the model than accept one. Watch the spend for the first week and set a limit at the provider, because the bill is the surprise here rather than the quality.
