About Claude Code

What it is

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It runs in your terminal and also in an editor extension and a desktop app. You give it a task in plain English and it reads the repository, edits files, runs commands and tests, and reports back. It works on your machine against your real project, not in a sandbox you paste code into.

Why it's different

It is aimed at whole tasks rather than autocomplete, so the unit of work is "fix this failing test" rather than "finish this line". That makes it genuinely useful on chores that are tedious but well defined. It also means it can do a lot of damage quickly if you let it run unsupervised in a repository with uncommitted work. It needs a Claude subscription or API credit, so it is not free to run, and it is slower than a completion tool because it is actually reading things.

How people use it

Fixing a failing test, tidying a migration, renaming something across a project, or writing the first draft of a change you will then edit. Asking what a piece of unfamiliar code does before you touch it. Commit before you start, so reviewing what it changed is one diff away, and keep tasks small enough that you can still read the result.
