About Descript
What it is
Descript edits video and audio by editing a transcript. It writes out what was said, and deleting a sentence in the text deletes it in the recording. It also strips filler words automatically, cleans up room sound, and can generate speech in a copy of your own voice to patch a line you got wrong.
Why it's different
For anything that is mostly talking, editing by text is dramatically faster than dragging clips along a timeline, and it makes editing possible for people who would never open a real editor. The limits appear when the video is not mostly talking: frame-accurate cutting, layered effects and complex transitions are all easier elsewhere, and long projects get sluggish. It is an excellent interview editor and a mediocre general one.
How people use it
Podcasts and interviews. Course and training video. Cutting a long recording into shorter pieces by deleting paragraphs. Removing every filler word from a talk in one pass. Record a clean take anyway: the repair tools are good, but a sentence rewritten in a cloned voice is noticeable more often than people expect.
Step by step
- Import the recording and wait for the transcript before touching anything, because every edit you make is an edit to that text.
- Remove filler words in one pass, then read the transcript once. Left unchecked it also removes words that were doing work.
- Cut by deleting sentences in the transcript rather than dragging on the timeline. That is the entire reason to be here.
- Use Studio Sound sparingly on a decent recording. It is transformative on bad audio and makes good audio sound processed.
- Patch a wrong word with the voice tool only for single words. A whole rewritten sentence is noticeable far more often than people expect.
- Keep the original file. The repair tools are not reversible once a project has been flattened.
