About Play.ht

What it is

Play.ht turns text into speech, with a large library of voices, support for many languages, voice cloning from a sample, and an API for putting generated speech inside another product.

Why it's different

It has pushed hardest on conversational realism, and on unscripted-sounding delivery it is among the more convincing options, which matters for anything longer than a few sentences where a flat read becomes unbearable. Against that, output varies between generations of the same text, so getting one line right can take several attempts, and the pricing model has changed more than once in ways that caught existing users out. Cloning requires the speaker's permission, which is not optional.

How people use it

Narration for articles, newsletters and long-form writing. Voice for an application or an assistant. Audiobook and podcast drafts. Localising narration across languages. Generate the opening and closing lines first, since those are the ones a listener judges, and regenerate rather than accepting an odd reading.
