About Copilot Workspace

What it is

Copilot Workspace is GitHub's agentic environment for working from an issue to a pull request. You start from an issue, it proposes a plan in plain language, you edit that plan, and it then writes the code, runs it and opens a pull request.

Why it's different

Making the plan editable before any code is written is the useful idea, and it addresses the main failure of coding agents: they confidently build the wrong thing and you find out at the end. Correcting a plan is cheap, correcting a finished branch is not. In practice it works best on small, well-described tasks and degrades on anything vague or spread across the codebase. It is also tied to GitHub, so a project hosted elsewhere cannot use it at all.

How people use it

Small well-defined issues, particularly from a backlog nobody gets to. Routine changes such as threading a new field through a stack. Making a first attempt for a reviewer to finish. Write the issue properly, because the quality of the plan follows the quality of the description far more than it follows the difficulty of the code.
